Show&Tell 3.2010

In our March Show and Tell session, we had a guest presentation by visiting rerearcher Akira Sano, as well as presentations by Aapo, Anne, Sanna, Joanna and Andrea.

Aapo started with a presentation of some experiments he has been undertaking for investigating TV interfaces for web-based content. Aapo has worked on customizing the Boxee application. The tests he has been putting together involve using the customized Boxee application to view content provided by the Finnish service These experiments will be tested by users who are currently using their computers in order to view TV content. We hope to get interesting insight into what could be the future of viewing TV or web-based content together.

Anne presented the latest status of the project she is working on, for the Crisis Management Initiative. The ICT4Statebuilding website is now up and running, but has not been officially released yet as it is still work in progress, waiting for more content to be filled in. The website will be used by CMI as well as hopefully in the future by governments who are in the process of building their own ICT infrastructure. The first pilot case is Liberia.

Akira had prepared a nice “tiny presentation” for us 🙂
He introduced the state of affairs in broadcasting on the Internet in Japan. He mentioned that right now, TV companies in Japan feel that there is a crisis going on in their field. The challenge comes from new broadcasting systems on the Internet. The most popular video sharing sites are You Tube and Smile Video (Nico Nico Douga in Japanese). Smile Video is especially popular with young people, who are fond of its feature that make it possible to collaboratively annotate the videos. USTREAM is also a very popular site used for live broadcasting.
Finally, Akira concluded by saying that broadcasting and movie sharing on Internet may indeed change the structure of media.

Sanna presented some of her ongoing research cases. She has been following the various practices related to video sharing and creative re-use online. She showed us the numa numa video, as a good example of the practice of lip synching and how many people have been following this practice and creating entertaining videos, using the embedded cameras in their laptops (also in the Day at the Office video). This technical possibility to record timed synchronizations by different people at the same time has made it possible for a new genre of collaboratively created online videos to see the day.

Joanna presented an overview of the Digital Habitats: stewarding technology for communities book by Wenger, White and Smith. The concept of Digital stewardship is interesting and helpful for whoever is researching or working with communities who are making use or want to make use of technological tools to support their activity. The book is easy to read and give practical advice on how to go about mapping the different layers that make up the relationships between communities and technologies.

Andrea presented two concepts she is currently interested in (maybe related to own research in the future) 1) Resilience refers to the capacity to deal with change and continue to develop it has been applied for example to understand ecological systems. Can this concept can be useful when thinking of technological systems for example, or when thinking of such complex entities as cities? Some think it might like this article suggests. 2) Prefigurative politics is a term used e.g by Marianne Maeckelbergh in her Reinventing Democracy paper. Maeckelbergh argues that through their activities, the anti-globalization movements are actually experimenting with large scale decision making mechanisms: for example, they create internal conflict on purpose, in order to be able to reach agreements.
